During 9 years of combat tours with the Marines and United States Army, Nick Lee's experience with unthinkable violence blinded him from the love of God.
"I didn't think any type of God would allow something so horrific and didn't see God as a positive light in my life," said Nick.
Discharged in 2009, Nick returned to civilian life, dismissed PTSD symptoms, and married the mother of his 12 year old son, Fresca who had given her life to Christ.
Not yet a Christian, Nick said, "I put on a good show, smiled, and told her want she wanted to hear." Bound to fail, their eight years of marriage was barraged with chaotic outbursts that led to divorce.
"I didn't understand why he would scream at our son or me with explosive reactions," Fresca said. "I would do whatever I could to push her away," added Nick.
Despite the divorce, "Fresca "prayed for Nick. I wanted God to open his eyes and save him" while Nick plunged into alcohol and suicidal thoughts.
"Everything in my life was bad, I contemplated hanging myself" and couldn't do it, said Nick. Yet he knew he had his "full six round 357 chamber loaded," aimed and "pulled the trigger. It didn't go off" he said.
Collapsed on the floor, Nick heard God say, "You're going to die if you continue living this way. Follow me."
In those moments of pain and surrender, "I told God why I hated Him. I told Him everything I had done and repented everything I had done. When I surrendered my life to Jesus, it was like everything went away," said Nick.
Fresca noticed the change too, after they agreed to meet. "He was radiating peace, looked ten years younger and the tone in his voice was soft." God took "all his anger and replaced it with joy and peace."
Now remarried, Nick and Fresca are grateful. God was "the reason why that bullet didn't take me and that's why I gave my life to Him," Nick said.
Fresca added, "Nick wasn't asking for God's help. He should have died, but God's grace changed everything!"
